AWP-1 is part of a larger international effort to build a desalination plant and distribute its water across Gaza. AWP-1 aims to:
- Build infrastructure to blend the water from the desalination plant with other water sources, and distribute it to consumers
- Procure water from Israel
- Build the capacity of water institutions
AWP-1 has already supplied drinking water to 280,000 people; the end target is 870,000 people.
The project seeks to support the continuation of wastewater treatment services in North Gaza and strengthen the capacity of the water institutions to manage wastewater services efficiently.

The WMS project provides wastewater services for 368,000 people in North Gaza by:
- Funding the continued operation of the North Gaza Wastewater Management Facilities (NGWMF) for four years
- Helping the NGWMF become sustainable in the long term.
The project¡¯s goal is to improve the reliability and quality of water supply services in selected areas and to strengthen the operational performance of sector institutions in the Palestinian territories
