Marina Wes is the World Bank Director of Strategy and Operations for the Western and Central Africa Region. Ms. Wes supports the Vice President for Western and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, in setting strategy and work programs across all sectors in the 22 countries of the sub-region. The Vice Presidency oversees a portfolio of more than 300 projects totaling more than $57 billion.
Ms. Wes, a Dutch national, is a development professional with 30 years of experience in development, economics, finance, and policy. She has worked on operations, policy advice and analytical activities in a wide range of countries at various income levels ¨C and in a range of conflict and post-conflict settings - in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South-Asia. Prior to her current role, she served consecutively as the World Bank Country Director for the European Union; for Egypt, Yemen, and Djibouti; and for West Bank and Gaza.
Before joining the World Bank in 2000, she worked as a principal economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and as an Assistant Professor in International Finance at the University of Amsterdam. Marina holds a doctorate degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and a Masters in Economic Theory and Econometrics from Trinity College, Cambridge University. In addition to her work on macroeconomic and growth issues, she has also published articles on trade, public finance, and foreign investment.
