Fifth IMF-World Bank-WTO Joint Trade Research Workshop

木瓜影院’s research department is hosting the Fifth IMF-World Bank-WTO Joint Trade Research Workshop at the World Bank on November 30, 2016. The event will bring together experts on trade from the three institutions to share their latest research findings and discuss current trade issues.

The main objectives of this workshop series are to demonstrate the importance of trade research to inform policy and to foster the research collaboration across the three institutions to increase coherence in policy advice.

Speakers at the conference will present research that addresses several themes: (1) Trade and Trade Barriers: Impacts on Productivity, Inequality, and the Poor; (2) Global Value Chains; (3) Goods Trade and Services Trade: Advances in Measurement; (4) FDI and migration: Barriers and impacts; and (5) Deepening Trade Integration through Trade Agreements.

This year’s workshop is being co-organized by Ana M. Fernandes and Alejandro Forero (木瓜影院) and their counterparts Christian Henn (International Monetary Fund) and Marc Auboin (World Trade Organization).

  • Aaditya Mattoo, World Bank

    Aaditya Mattoo is Research Manager, Trade and Integration, at the World Bank. He specializes in trade policy analysis and international trade agreements. Prior to joining the Bank in 1999, Mr. Mattoo was Economic Counsellor at the World Trade Organization. Between 1988 and 1991, he taught economics at the University of Sussex and Churchill College, Cambridge University. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cambridge, and an M.Phil in Economics from the University of Oxford. He has published widely in academic and other journals on trade, trade in services, development and the WTO and his work has been cited extensively, including in the Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, and Time Magazine.

  • Hiau-Looi Kee, World Bank

    Hiau Looi Kee is a Senior Economist with the Trade Team of the World Bank Research Department. Her research focuses on trade, productivity and growth at the firm and aggregate level. Her current projects include studying the domestic value-added in exports, shared-supplier spillovers of FDI, rules of origin and firm productivity in Bangladesh's garment sector and large scale estimations of import demand elasticities, ad valorem equivalent of non-tariff measures, and trade restrictiveness indexes. Her work has been published in many general interests economics journals and the top field journals. She has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Davis.

  • Alen Mulabdic, World Bank

    Alen Mulabdic is an International Trade Economist, working as a consultant for the Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice at the World Bank. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva. His expertise lies in the analysis of international trade agreements and their depth, on trade patterns. He has also worked on the economics of civil conflict.

  • Shawn Tan, World Bank

    Shawn Tan is an Economist in the World Bank’s Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice. He works on trade and private sector development issues for countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Prior to working at the World Bank, he was at the Singapore Economic Development Board as a senior officer, where he worked on Singapore’s trade agreement negotiations and trade facilitation issues. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics for the University of Melbourne. His research interests are broadly in international trade, economic geography, and the effects of institution, policy or regulation changes on firms.

  • Paulo Bastos, World Bank

    Paulo Bastos is a Senior Economist in the Development Research Group of the World Bank, Trade and International Integration Unit. His research interests include the drivers of firm performance in international markets, the distributional impacts of globalization, and the nexus between migration and trade. His research has appeared in scholarly journals such as the Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Industrial Economics and International Journal of Industrial Organization. Prior to joining the World Bank, he held positions at the Research Department of the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Commission and the University of Nottingham. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Nottingham and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Porto.

  • Mathilde Lebrand, World Bank

    Mathilde Lebrand is currently working in the Chief economist office of Europe & Central Asia at the World Bank. She holds Master degrees in Econometrics and Economics from ENSAE and Paris School of Economics. She obtained a PhD in economics from the European University Institute. Her research focuses on international trade, foreign direct investment, networks and political economy. Mathilde has previously worked at the WTO in Geneva. She is a CESifo Research fellow.

  • Gee Hee Hong, IMF

    Gee Hee Hong is an economist at the Research Department, Macro Financial Division, of the International Monetary Fund. Her work mainly focuses on inflation dynamics, transmission of monetary policy and various trade issues including exchange rate pass-through and global value chain. Previously, she worked on regional surveillance issues and was a desk economist to Fiji in the Asia and Pacific Department at the IMF (2014-2016). Prior to joining the IMF, she worked at Bank of Canada (2012-2014). Ms. Hong holds a B.A. from Seoul National University (2006) and an M.A. and a Ph.D from University of California, Berkeley (2012).

  • Chris Papageorgiou, IMF

    Chris Papageorgiou is a Deputy Division Chief in the Development Macroeconomics division of the IMF’s Research Department. His analytical work is primarily focused on economic growth and international macroeconomics. He has published extensively and is an associate editor of the European Economic Review and the IMF Economic Review.

  • Swarnali Hannan, IMF

    Swarnali Ahmed Hannan is an Economist in Strategy, Policy and Review Department at the International Monetary Fund, having worked previously in the European Department. She also worked at Goldman Sachs International for three years, focusing on research related to global macroeconomics, emerging markets (BRICs), foreign exchange and fixed income. Her research interests include applied macroeconomics, international trade, financial markets and structural reforms. She has previously worked on Portugal, Malta, Ghana, and is currently looking at external sector issues in Romania. She holds a PhD in economics from Oxford University (UK).

  • JaeBin Ahn, IMF

    JaeBin Ahn is an economist at the IMF. Currently, he is in the Research department, covering external sector assessment issues. Prior to this position, he was in the Asia and Pacific department at the IMF, covering Indonesia and Malaysia. Before joining the IMF’s Economist Program, he was a dissertation intern at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. His area of research includes international trade and finance, with particular interests in deriving macroeconomic implications from micro-level theory and evidence. His research has been published in leading academic journals. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University and his B.S. in Material Science from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

  • Matthieu Bellon, IMF

    Matthieu Bellon is an Economist at the IMF in the African Department working on C?te d’Ivoire. He has recently joined the Fund Economist Program after completing a PhD program in economics at Columbia University. His dissertation examines the effects of liberalization reforms on the reallocation of workers and the response of wage inequality over time. His economic policy and research interests include international trade, the effects of globalization on workers, firm dynamics and the role of finance for industrial growth. Prior to his PhD, he worked for the Banque de France and the Société Générale Investment Bank.

  • Marc Aboin, WTO

    Marc Auboin is a Counsellor at the Economic Research Division of the WTO, responsible for the institution trade and finance agenda, including trade finance and overall relations with the WB and IMF. He holds a Ph.D in Economics from Sciences-Po Paris and was a Research Fellow at the LSE and Yale University. Previously he held several positions at the IMF, the European Commission and the French Treasury. He was an assistant professor at Sciences-Po and a regular lecturer at Sorbonne, Louvain, CERDI, and World Trade Institute in Bern.

  • Cosimo Beverelli, WTO

    Cosimo Beverelli is a research economist in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO. His previously held research positions at the Geneva School of Economics and Management, at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, and at UNCTAD. He has published on trade facilitation, trade in natural resources, migration policy, outsourcing and competition policy. He is a graduate of the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona and holds a Ph.D. in international economics from the Graduate Institute, Geneva. His current research focuses on the effects of services trade policy, global value chains, trade facilitation, trade and migration, and non-tariff measures.

  • Roberta Piermartini, WTO

    Roberta Piermartini is Chief of section in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO. Her research focuses on trade theory and trade policy analysis. Her papers have been published in The American Economic Journal, Journal of International Economics, The World Economy, Review of World Economics, Journal of African Economic, International Economics and Economic Policy and various books. Since 2003 she is one of the authors of World Trade Report (WTR) and she coordinated the WTR in 2009 and 2014. She is co-author of "A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Modelling" and "An Advanced Guide to Trade Policy Modelling." She coordinated the WTO-World bank Group joint publication on "The role of trade in ending poverty". She has served the WTO Dispute Settlement in several Panel and Arbitration cases. Prior to joining the WTO in 2000, she was lecturer in economics and statistics at the University of Southampton and research fellow in the research division of Confindustria. She also has been teaching at the University of Geneva and LUISS. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton.

  • Harry Smythe, University of Denver

    Harry Smythe is a Research Consultant for the Pardee Center for International Futures at the Josef Korbel School at the University of Denver. His research interests are international economics, international development, and econometrics.
