University-Industry Partnership

  • The session introduced multiple opportunities that the companies can participate to collaborate with African universities to conduct market and product research, research and development, commercialization of research, and prototype development. Companies can also tap into African talent through accepting interns, conducting joint research and providing training. Partnering with African universities is a great way to learn about the needs, opportunities, and feasibility of African market. Case example from Kenya will be also shared.

    Mike Hughes

    Science, Advisor, Ministry of Education, Rwanda

    Mike Hughes is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the Power Industry, Telecommunications, and more recently in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy and Strategy. He was appointed as Science, Technology and Innovation Advisor to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Research from 2004-2006, Ministry in the President's Office in Charge of Science, Technology and Information Communication Technologies from 2006-2009, and Ministry of Education since August 2009. His key role is to develop, and support the implementation of, National Policy and Strategy for the development of Science, Technology and Innovation for social development and economic growth.

    Tsuneo (Neil) Yoneda

    Manager of F-Pro Business Group, Ricoh Company Ltd

    Through his career Neil has been holding different leading commercial and business development positions at Ricoh. He led several strategic projects in Ricoh¡¯s strategic markets such as: Russia, where he successfully set up an IT distribution Channel, as well as in India and China where IoT Printer System project has been successfully implemented. Today Neil¡¯s focus is two directions: establish Ricoh footprint with innovative technologies while delivering to sustainable goals and resolving social issues.

    Saori Imaizumi

    Education Specialist, Global Practice, World Bank

    Saori works with East and Southern Africa Region Education Global Practice, focusing on regional higher education and innovation projects, such as Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET) and Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE). As an EdTech Fellow, she also involves in Digital Skills Assessment in Kenya and Rwanda, advise, research and involves in the projects related to the use of technoloties in Education, Workforce Development, and Employment issue. Previously, she worked with an Education Team in South Asia Region on skills development, higher education, and teacher education projects in India and Pakistan. Prior to joining the Bank, she has interned at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and worked at Accenture in Japan as an IT/management consultant. She holds a M.A. in Development Economics and International Business from the Fletcher School at Tufts University and B.A. in Government and International Relations from Wesleyan University.

    Toshihiro Nakamura

    Co-Founder and CEO, Kopernik

    Toshi, together with his wife Ewa Wojkowska, co-founded Kopernik in 2010 with a vision to make international development more effective. Before starting Kopernik, Toshi dealt with governance reform, peace building processes, monitoring and evaluation, and post-disaster reconstruction at the United Nations (UN) in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, the United States and Switzerland. Prior to joining the UN, Toshi was a management consultant for McKinsey and Company in Tokyo. He holds an LLB from Kyoto University and MSc Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and is a Guest Professor at Osaka University's Center for the Study of Co*Design, Osaka University. Toshi was selected as a World Economic Forum (WEF) Young Global Leader in 2012, and was a member of the WEF Global Agenda Council on Sustainable Development 2014-2016.
