As part of the research program Social Divides and Norms: Disparities across Gender, Opportunity, and Location in South Asia, the Chief Economist Office of the South Asia region, in cooperation with the Global Practices and the Development Research Group, has co-organized a series of seminars and workshops on how social norms are affecting gender equality.
This workshop �C the third in a series started with two earlier events on Son preference and Gendered norms �C focuses on policy and operational interventions aimed at improving women��s outcomes by shifting social norms. This workshop features all the World Bank Gender Innovation Labs (GIL) discussing a range of initiatives, approaches, and lessons learned from their work across different world regions.
Hans Timmer

Chief Economist, South Asia, World Bank
Hans Timmer is the World Bank's Chief Economist for South Asia. He assumed this position on January 1, 2019. Before that, he was the Chief Economist for the Europe and Central Asia region of the World Bank. Timmer is a quantitative international macroeconomist and econometrician with 30 years of management experience in leading teams of modelers, forecasters, and policy analysts. His experience ranges from long-term structural analyses of the economic impact of environmental policies, trade policies, and tax reforms, to short-term monitoring of the business cycle and analysis of monetary and fiscal policies. Before joining the World Bank in 2000, Timmer was head of international economic analysis at the Central Planning Bureau in the Netherlands.

Maurizio Bussolo

Lead Economist, South Asia, World Bank
Maurizio Bussolo, lead economist in the Chief Economist Office for South Asia, has been working on quantitative analyses of economic policy and development with research interests spanning both micro and macroeconomic topics. At the World Bank, he also worked in the Chief Economist Office for Europe and Central Asia and in the Development Economics Prospects Group; and he led operational teams in the aftermath of the 2008-09 crisis negotiating with Latin American and Caribbean governments the implementation of reforms to shield the most vulnerable. Before joining the World Bank in 2003, Bussolo worked at the OECD, at the Overseas Development Institute in London, and at Fedesarrollo and the Los Andes University in Colombia. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Warwick.

Ana Maria Munoz Boudet

SENIOR SOCIAL SCIENTIST, Poverty and Equity Global Practice, WORLD BANK
Ana Maria Munoz Boudet is a senior social scientist in the World Bank��s Poverty and Equity Global Practice with the Mind, Behavior, and Development Unit (eMBeD). Her work focuses on gender, poverty and inequality issues. She has worked in Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia, Africa, and South Asia. As part of eMBeD Ana Maria��s work has focused on socio-emotional skills development to close gaps in education and labor markets, and in changing behaviors associated with negative human capital outcomes. Ana Maria is also part of the South Asia Gender Innovation Lab (SARGIL). A sociologist by training, she holds a master��s degree from the London School of Economics and doctorate studies from the University College of London.

Rachael Pierotti

Social Development Specialist, Eastern & Southern Africa, World Bank
Rachael Pierotti is a Research Specialist in the World Bank's Africa Region Gender Innovation Lab. Her research examines the causes and consequences of gender inequality in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the effectiveness of programs designed to combat its detrimental effects. Her work is particularly attentive to the systems of belief that legitimate ongoing gender inequality, and how those beliefs relate to health, demographic, and economic behaviors. Rachael collaborated with other members of the DI studies team to examine the reach of developmental idealism in Malawi.

Kate Ambler

Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute
Kate Ambler is a Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). She completed her Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Michigan in 2013, specializing in development economics and economic demography. Her research interests include gender and household economics, evaluation of agricultural programs, and migration and remittances. She has experience with research conducted using randomized control trials, framed field experiments, and secondary data, and has worked on projects in sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.

Elizaveta Perova

Senior Economist, East Asia & Pacific, World Bank
Elizaveta Perova is a Senior Economist at East Asia and Pacific Chief Economist Office. She leads East Asia and Pacific Gender Innovation Lab. She is a micro-economist by training, and has worked on poverty measurement, labor and gender. She has MPP and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.

Benjamin Burckhart

Senior Social Development
Ben, a French national, joined the Bank in 2004 and has worked in various assignments including in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, and Washington D.C. Throughout his career, Ben has worked on complex post-conflict situations, focusing mainly on DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration) and Forced Displacement situations. Ben has a track record of building partnerships with clients, donors and other stakeholders, including various UN peacekeeping missions, UN agencies (UNHCR, UNDP, ILO and FAO), governments, the African Union and community-based organizations in the Great Lakes region in Africa and Cameroon. Ben holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Management Information System and Spatial Application from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chauss��es in Paris, France.

Sarah Haddock

Senior Social Development Specialist, South Asia, World Bank
Sarah is a Senior Social Development Specialist, supporting country programs in SAR, including for Afghanistan and Nepal. Sarah brings 18+ years of experience working on gender and youth inclusion and women��s economic empowerment programming and evaluation. Sarah joined the World Bank in 2010, first working in the LAC Poverty and Gender unit before joining the Global Gender Group in 2012. Prior to that she was a researcher at Population Action International, where she focused on youth sexual and reproductive health and rights. Sarah holds an MA in development economics and international monetary theory and policy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Amna Javed

Consultant, South Asia, World Bank
Amna Javed is a World Bank Consultant at the South Asia Gender Innovation Lab. Her research focuses on the intersection of applied development economics with gender. Some of the topics she has studied include violence against women, early marriage, fertility, and economic empowerment. An Economist by training, Amna received her Masters and PhD from the University of Oregon.

Lourdes Rodriguez

Senior Economist, Latin America & Caribbean, World Bank
Lourdes Rodriguez-Chamussy is an economist in the Poverty and Equity Global Practice at ľ��ӰԺ, where she has worked in the Europe and Central Asia and Latin America and Caribbean regional units. Her work focuses on applied microeconomics, labor markets, political economy of development, and gender. Before joining the Bank, she worked at the Inter-American Development Bank and the George Washington University. She holds a Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Manuel Contreras

Senior Economist, Latin America & Caribbean, World Bank
Manuel Contreras-Urbina works at the World Bank as a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Specialist for the Latin America and Caribbean. He has 25 years of experience in gender research and programs. Before joining the Bank, he served as the Director of Research of the Global Women��s Institute at the George Washington University, as the Programme Officer at UN Women in Mexico and Central America and as the coordinator of the Gender, Violence and Rights portfolio at the International Center for Research on Women. Manuel earned a PhD in Population and Gender from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Lili Mottaghi

Senior Economist, Middle East & North Africa, World Bank
Lili Mottaghi is a Senior Economist in the office of the Chief Economist for the Middle East and North Africa Region of the World Bank. She leads the work on regional macroeconomic outlook and has developed two semi-annual flagship publications MENA Economic Monitor and MENA Quarterly Economic Brief. She also leads the Middle East and North Africa Gender Innovation Lab (MNAGIL) - Evidence for Policy Research - at the World Bank. Her research covers a wide range of topics in macroeconomics and development. Before joining the Bank, she worked at the Management and Planning Organization in Iran where she held senior positions in the areas of economic growth, development, and macroeconomic modeling. Ms. Mottaghi received her Master and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Claremont Graduate University and University of Tehran.

Nausheen Khan

Impact Evaluation Analyst, Development Research Group, World Bank
Nausheen Khan is an Impact Evaluation Analyst with the Development Impact Evaluation (DIME), part of the World Bank��s Development Research Group (DEC). She works primarily on IEs in fragile, conflict & violence (FCV) contexts, which incorporate labor market and social protection interventions, often with a focus on gender. Her main areas of interest are survey design, data analysis and translating evidence-based research into policy. Prior to DIME, she worked at Khan Foundation, a non-government organization in Bangladesh focusing on democracy, social development and human rights. She holds a Master��s degree in International Development Policy from Georgetown University, and a Bachelor��s in Economics and Politics from Mount Holyoke College.

Hala ElBehairy

Research Associate, Poverty Action Lab, Middle East and North Africa
Hala Elbehairy is a Research Associate at J-PAL MENA. She works on evaluating the impact of the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity��s program to improve access to nurseries and employment services on mothers' labor market outcomes and early childhood development. Prior to joining J-PAL in 2021, she worked as a Consultant at The International Institute for Educational Planning IIEP-UNESCO (Paris) and also as a Research Assistant for different projects related to the Labor Market Dynamics and Female Labor Force Participation in the MENA region. She holds a Master��s degree in Public Policy/Applied economics from the University of Paris I Panthe?on Sorbonne and a dual Bachelor��s degree in Economics from the University of Paris I Panthe?on Sorbonne and Cairo University.
