Program Concept:
Uzbekistan is highly vulnerable to natural and climate-induced hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and droughts, which are exacerbated by climate change. The country's aging energy infrastructure is exposed to disaster risks, which complicates the challenge of providing reliable power to meet growing domestic demand. To improve the resilience of the country's power transmission and distribution infrastructure, the World Bank is organizing a knowledge exchange to Japan for a delegation of key energy sector agencies from Uzbekistan to learn about resilient energy supply infrastructure.
The knowledge exchange will provide the Uzbek delegation, which includes representatives from Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade, Ministry of Energy, Energy Market Development and Regulation Agency, and Regional Electric Power Network (REPN), with the opportunity to learn from Japan's experience, knowledge, and best practices in disaster risk management (DRM) and resilient energy systems. This knowledge exchange was made possible with financial support from the Japan-World Bank Program for Mainstreaming DRM in Developing Countries, which is financed by the Government of Japan and receives technical support from the World Bank GFDRR Tokyo Disaster Risk Management Hub.
The Uzbek delegation will visit key energy installations in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Takayama. They will meet with leading Japanese ministries, utilities, energy companies, and universities such as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Tokyo Electric Power Grid, Chubu Electric Power Grid, and Waseda University, as well as Japanese investment companies and manufacturers that specialize in resilient energy infrastructure. The delegation will have the opportunity to visit critical facilities, including Tokyo Electric Power Grid¡¯s central dispatch center in Tokyo and Chubu¡¯s Hida High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station in Takayama. These interactions and site visits will offer valuable insights into the implementation of resilient and adaptive designs in modernizing transmission and distribution assets.
This will be an invitation-only event for Uzbekistan delegates.
