We offer several appointment types at the World Bank

Staff

Staff are full-time employees with full benefits. There are two types of staff appointments:

  • Local Appointments ¨C Staff hired for jobs that do not require international experience. These are common appointment types in country offices.
  • International Appointments ¨C Staff hired for jobs that require international experience and expertise.
  • Staff Grade Levelsľ¹ÏÓ°Ôº has 10 grade levels, which are organized into three groups:
    • Administrative Jobs (GA¨CGD) generally require a Bachelor¡¯s degree.
    • Professional & Technical Jobs (GE-GH) usually require a Masters or PhD.
    • Managerial Jobs (GH¨CGJ) require experience managing teams, work programs, and budgets.

Consultants

Extended Term Consultants (ETC)

12-month contracts with partial benefits. Benefits include medical insurance, leave, and 15% premium upon termination of the appointment. ETCs are renewable for a life-time cap of three years.

Short Term Consultants (STC)

STCs have a 150-day (or less) contract per fiscal year with no benefits. STCs working in Fragile States are eligible to work up to 190 days per fiscal year. Health insurance plans are made available for independent purchase.

Close Relative Rule

A staff member is required to inform Human Resources if that staff learns that a close relative (as described below) is working at or applying for a position with the World Bank. This applies to close relatives who perform services for the World Bank under a World Bank appointment or as an employee of a firm, and to the close relatives of Executive Directors, Alternate Executive Directors, and Senior Advisors to the Executive Director.

Category of Relatives who are not eligible for employment:

  • Mother, father, son, daughter.
  • Sister, brother, half-sister, half-brother.
  • Aunt, uncle, niece, nephew.

Limitations on Employment

Spouses and domestic partners of World Bank employees:

  • May not be assigned to the same division or equivalent unit.
  • May be assigned to the same vice presidency or department if neither supervises the other (directly or indirectly) and their duties will not bring them into routine professional contact.

Spouses and domestic partners may be assigned to the same country office if:

  • Neither supervises the other (directly or indirectly).
  • The vice president responsible for the country office, in consultation with the manager for Human Resources, grants permission.

The Bank Group's recruitment policy is to hire staff of the highest caliber, on as wide a geographical basis as possible, with preference to nationals of WBG member countries or countries of operations.  If the country of your nationality does not appear in the drop-down menu, it is because it is not a member of the World Bank Group, nor a country of operations.
