Chorching Goh

Lead Economist, Africa

Chorching joined the Office of the Chief Economist of the Africa Region in August 2021.  Chorching was based in Beijing (2012-2015) as the Lead Economist for China, Mongolia, and South Korea. Prior to this, she was the Lead Economist for Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan, based in Addis Ababa (2010-2012).  Chorching was the Senior Economist for Russia, and also worked on the former Soviet Republics, and the European Union member states (2008-2010).   During 2015-2020, she worked at the Development Economics Vice Presidency on countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

Her operational work has involved research, analysis, lending, policy dialogues and consultations with government officials, the civil society, and members of the broader development community.  Her experience is broad:  In addition to the Russian Federation and former Soviet Republics, she has worked in the Middle East and Northern Africa, the Sub-Saharan Africa, and throughout Asia ¨C Northeast, Southeast, and Central Asia as well as the European Union member states.  

Her work programs over the years consist of a blend of analytical work and client engagements.  She has led the Cambodia, Mongolia and Philippines annual flagship reports on poverty, growth, and inequality; researched on micronutrient deficiency in Madagascar; engaged with the European Commission in territorial development debates; published on Russia¡¯s economic diversification; initiated work on cities for the former Soviet Republics; advised Ethiopian authorities on their Five-Year Plan; and worked on various economic issues to prepare for South Sudan¡¯s independence.   Chorching was a deputy director of the 2009 World Development Report on Economic Geography (2007-2008) and subsequently applied these insights on territorial development issues in the lagging areas of countries in the Middle East and North Africa (2015-17). 

She graduated summa cum laude from Yale University, with simultaneous BA and MA degrees.  After getting her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, she joined the World Bank as a Young Professional.
