Statement on International Women¡¯s Day

WASHINGTON, Mar. 8, 2022¡ª On International Women¡¯s Day, the World Bank Group honors women¡¯s historic achievements and contributions while recognizing that massive gender gaps still persist. Gender equality remains a priority for the World Bank Group ¨C both in our operations and in the organization. We are aiming for transformative change with our year-long Accelerate Equality initiative, which explores the important progress made and lessons learned over the last 10 years since the WDR 2012 on Gender Equality and Development, and develops ideas and a momentum for the future while strengthening partnerships with a diverse group of stakeholders.

We continue to work with our clients to find innovative solutions to help close gender gaps and promote women¡¯s and girls¡¯ empowerment. Transformative change toward gender equality requires further investments, changes in law and policies, interventions to shift social and gender norms, and the audacity to change power relations. The world would be better off with more women as leaders, entrepreneurs, and agents of change for development.
