About
The Global Payment Systems Survey (GPSS), conducted by the World Bank, surveys national and regional central banks and monetary authorities to gather information on the status of payment systems. The survey uses both quantitative and qualitative measures to assess all aspects of national payment systems, including infrastructure, legal and regulatory environments, technological and business model innovations, international remittances, and oversight frameworks. Furthermore, the survey collects information on payment system reforms and the factors that hinder or facilitate them.
This information is crucial for guiding policy dialogue at both the international and national levels and informing World Bank Group technical assistance. The findings of the GPSS play a significant role in supporting the development of payment systems in different countries through the World Bank Group's technical assistance.
The first edition of the GPSS survey was launched in April 2007 to collect information on the state of national payment and securities settlement systems globally. Over the years, the GPSS has been continuously updated to capture emerging trends in the payment sector. To effectively capture these trends, several questions have been adapted and incorporated into recent iterations of the survey. For example, the GPSS now includes data beyond the traditional banking sector, covering fintech, mobile money operators, and other payment service providers. Additionally, the survey now includes information on cybersecurity efforts and central bank digital currencies.
To ensure consistency and enable trend analysis, the structure of the publications and supportive data has been preserved as much as possible. This allows for a comprehensive understanding of the changes and developments in payment systems over time.
